Most weekend guides for small North Carolina towns give you a list. Pick a hike. Pick a restaurant. Pick a shop. What Mount Gilead actually offers is the opposite: a town small enough that you can stack all three into a single Saturday without driving more than fifteen minutes between them. The Wood Run Trailhead sits on NC 24/27 at the western edge of town. Luna's Pizza is at 104 S Main. Kings Mountain Point on Badin Lake is a short drive north. That geometry is the thesis of this post, and everything below is a route through it.
Start at Wood Run, Not Badin Lake
If you have hiked here before, you have probably done the Badin Lake loop. It is the default recommendation, and it earns that with lake views for roughly half its length. But it is also the trail that everyone else picks on a summer Saturday, and the trail leads you straight through people's camps when the campgrounds are full.
The quieter start is Wood Run. The Uwharrie National Recreation Trail runs 28 miles from the Wood Run Trailhead on NC 24/27 in Mt. Gilead to the Walkers Creek Trailhead located on High Pine Church road in Asheboro, which means you can walk out for an hour, turn around, and be back in town for lunch. Dutchman's Creek Trail, 9.5 miles marked with yellow blazes, starts at Wood Run as well, ends at Yates Camp, and was designed as a loop system with the southern portion of the Uwharrie Trail. That loop design is the part locals actually use. You can chain a short Uwharrie Trail segment with a Dutchman's return without shuttling a car.
Practical note for July: cell service inside the forest is thin. There is little to no cell service in many parts of the forest, so download your AllTrails maps in advance or grab a printed map before heading out.
If you want the lake without the campground crowd, drive to Kings Mountain Point Day Use Area and start the Badin Lake loop there. From that point, the trail travels north and features various viewpoints of the lake, fishing spots, and picnic tables to rest. It continues to trace the shoreline until reaching a densely forested area near Arrowhead Campground and travels past several other camping sites before returning to the parking lot. Going clockwise from Kings Mountain Point puts the campground stretch at the back half of the walk, when you are ready to be near people again.
Trailhead Options, Ranked by Effort
For a resident planning a Saturday morning, the question is rarely "which trail is prettiest." It is "which trail fits the two hours I have before it gets hot." Here is the honest breakdown from the research:
- Badin Lake Trail from Kings Mountain Point. A moderate hike that covers 5.4 miles, with an elevation gain of 295 feet. It takes about 2 to 2.5 hours to complete.
- Dutchman's Creek from Wood Run. 9.5 miles one way, so treat it as an out-and-back. Yellow blazes.
- Denson's Creek from the Uwharrie National Forest office. This nature hike begins behind the Uwharrie National Forest office on NC 24/27, 2 miles east of Troy. This trail has two loops: a short loop of 0.75 miles and a longer loop of 2.2 miles. Best for a quick before-breakfast walk with the dog.
- Arrowhead Campground paved loop. Arrowhead Campground has 48 sites for tent and RV camping. Sites #46 through #49 are tent only. A 0.75-mile paved bicycle and walking path loops around the campground. Flat, paved, easy on knees.
If you are bringing the Jeep or side-by-side instead of walking, the calculus changes. Nearly 20 miles of Off-Highway Vehicle trails run through the Badin Lake Recreation Area. Daily or season passes are required and North Carolina OHV regulations apply. The pricing is the part most first-timers miss: the cost is $5 per day or $30 for the season, April to December. Passes are sold at Eldorado Outpost at 4021 NC109 in Troy, Swift Island BP at NC24/27 and River Rd. in Mt. Gilead, Uwharrie Trails General Store at 4568 NC 109 in Troy, and the Uwharrie National Forest District Office on Hwy 24/27 east of Troy. If you plan to ride more than six times a year, the season pass pays for itself.
The Main Street Middle
Come back into town hot and hungry and you are within four blocks of every meal option worth eating. Locals already know this. Newer residents sometimes miss that Main Street is walkable end to end.
Luna's is the anchor. Luna's Pizza & Restaurant is at 104 S Main St, Mt Gilead, NC 27306. The health department gave it a 93 out of 100 score, which is a fair floor for a Saturday lunch with kids. If you want a sit-down American plate instead, The Ford Place is the story most out-of-towners do not know: it sits in a refurbished Ford dealership. The facilities are very nice. Burger Shack rounds out the trio for a quick counter meal.
For coffee before the trail or a book after it, two stops matter. Speckled Paw Coffee is the caffeine option. And the new arrival worth watching is Storyteller Book Co, coming to downtown Mount Gilead, focused on selling new books, special editions, and children's books and gifts. A bookstore opening in a town this size is not a small thing.
The shop that ties the day together, though, is Cotton & Wood. It sits at 118 N Main St in what the owners describe as a 120-plus historically listed building that they renovated in Mt Gilead, with wine, craft beer, gifts and home decor. Established in 2018. Hours are the catch. Store hours are Monday and Tuesday by appointment only, Wednesday noon to 6pm, Thursday noon to 8pm, Friday noon to 6pm, and Saturday and Sunday closed. That Thursday-until-8 window is the one to plan around. It is the closest thing Mount Gilead has to a wine bar evening, and it does not exist on the weekend.
For antiques and gifts on Saturday itself, The Mount Gilead Antique Mall and Memory Lane are each brimming with vintage treasures and collectibles, and Frames On Main handles art on the same block.
Afternoon on the Water
By early afternoon the trails are warm and the lake is the better call. The launch geometry matters here. Arrowhead Campground at 789 NC Hwy 24/27 E is near the Cove Boat Ramp for launching trailered boats and is shaded by loblolly pines and oaks with 50 campsites a quarter mile from Badin Lake. Sites 12 through 45 have electricity while all have a picnic table, grill, lantern post and fire ring. The campground has 6 water spigots, a bathhouse with flush toilets and showers. There are single and double sites and a dump station is available for sewer and drinking water for RVs. Alcohol is prohibited in the campground.
If you do not own a boat, the daytripper move is Kings Mountain Point. Visitors can enjoy fishing piers, a swimming beach, and picnic spots at King's Mountain Point, all with easy access to the trails. Bring a cooler, claim a table, walk the paved half of the loop, and swim between bites. Riders on horseback have their own network. Canebrake Horse Camp offering 40 miles of nearby horse trails has all electric sites and is near the shores of Badin Lake for fishing. It has 29 sites with parking spurs for trailers and each site has a picnic table, grill, fire ring, tack table, lantern and highline posts.
For rentals, River Wild operates out of 1185 Lillys Bridge Road, Mt Gilead, which puts you on Lake Tillery instead of Badin. That is the small navigation choice most out-of-town guests make wrong on their first visit. Tillery to the south, Badin to the north, and they fish and feel different.
Evenings and the Yearly Calendar
Not every Saturday needs a plan beyond dinner. But the town calendar is worth memorizing because most of it happens on Main Street, on foot, once a year.

The Street Dance is the summer marker. The Mount Gilead Street Dance is an annual event that takes place in the downtown area of Mount Gilead, usually during the summer months. The event is a beloved tradition in the town and draws large crowds of residents and visitors each year. The Street Dance typically features live music performances from local bands, as well as food vendors and other fun and festive activities. The main attraction of the event is the dancing in the streets. Fall Fest is on a Saturday in October and features live music performances, carnival rides and games, craft vendors, food trucks, and this year it lands on October 17. May Day at Highland features a Maypole dance and other traditional activities, as well as tours of the historic Highland School. The Juneteenth celebration at the Highland Community Center honors emancipation in the United States with live music, food vendors, and educational exhibits.
Between those anchor events, the practical evening plan is quiet: coffee at Speckled Paw, a walk past Town Creek Indian Mound if you have not been in a while, and a slow dinner at The Ford Place or Luna's before the sun drops behind the Uwharries.

Bigger lake towns force you to pick between the trail and the town. Mount Gilead is small enough that the trail, the town, and the water are the same afternoon. That compactness is not a marketing line. It is a distance measurement. From the Wood Run Trailhead on NC 24/27 to Cotton & Wood at 118 N Main to the Cove Boat Ramp near Arrowhead is a route you can drive in under twenty minutes, with three genuinely different experiences at the stops.
